Geek Chic: sarahseven on Etsy

I found this designer on Etsy this morning and I cannot get over how perfect these little dresses are. I want one of each.

You can see the rest of the collection here.

P.S. She also gives 5% of the profit of each garment to charity. Next time I have an event to go to, I have no excuse not to shop from her.

¡panamapplique!

Two months ago I visited my sister in Panama for a week. One of the most impressive aspects of the trip was the presence of indigenous tribes in the downtown areas of Panama City who would make the trek in every day (and go home every night) just to sell their handmade crafts to tourists. The pieces above are 100% handmade applique swatches that I bought from members of the Kuna tribe. They literally had piles of these amazing, ornate pieces (each about 20"x20" or larger).

The first one I got for myself and the second one I bought for Brendan as a gift. When I bought the one for Brendan it was attached to about 6 others of it's kind to form a long, table runner type textile. I only wanted the one piece and thanks to the language barrier really lost out on a great deal. The Kuna man wanted to sell me all of them for $20 dollars. I thought he meant just the one piece for $20. I kept saying I just wanted the one piece so he tore it from the rest and I paid him the $20. Needless to say, I'm totally kicking myself now.

Take Time.

Last week I got the chance to see "The Books" play at the ICA in Boston. Seeing these guys live is really the only way to go and since it had been almost four years since I'd last seen them, of course I was chomping at the bit. They played an amazing set (as usual) that was a combination of their older stuff and some brand new gems.

I highly recommend getting to the ICA for a live music show if you can. The venue is small, but incredibly designed. One whole wall on the left side is made of glass and allows for a beautiful night view of the city and the water. So lovely. The cherry on top are the amazing acoustics of the theater making for a near perfect listening experience. Go there!

For those of you who haven't heard of "The Books" before, they're a music duo from the Massachusetts area who use found video and audio clips to create pieces of art and sound. There's really nothing else like it. Original, imaginative, melancholy, absurd, supremely clever... Check out the (terribly filmed by me, I apologize) clip below of the beginning portion of one of my favorite songs of theirs, "Take Time".

over&over

Recently I've been taking a textiles class at RISD and I'm LOVING it.

It's focused on using digital tools to create repetitive pattern for home, fashion, books, stationary, etc. Surprisingly I'm finding myself psyched on learning all of these Graphic Design tricks and playing with color has been really fun as well. So far we've only really been doing smaller, quick exercises that are focused on learning basic skills while creating a color palette for the patterns we'll eventually make. Overall, though, being able to create something purely based on my own aesthetic and guttural instincts has been so refreshing! WHY DID I STOP MAKING ART BACK THERE? I must've been crazy.

Here are some examples of what I've been working on.

One awesome source of inspiration for me recently has been a book that Brendan let me borrow. I highly recommend that you check this out. Especially if you're into unusual print designs. I also love that it shares the name of one of my favorite Hot Chip songs.

Getting "It" Together

OK. After much procrastination I'm choosing to dive right in.

I've been putting off getting this thing off the ground in hopes that my skillful graphic designer friends might help me to make it look pretty first, but I suppose all of that can come later. I can't stand to waste any more time.

The more I think about the future the more I'm itching to make a BIG change. HUGE! AND the more I dream about one day running the show myself. "The show" being my source of livelihood, daily grind... work, that is. I want to be in charge. I want to do it myself. If I'm going to spend such a large percentage of my time (and life) earning a wage I want it to be on my own terms. I want it to be for something I believe in. So in order to feed my entrepreneurial spirit I've decided to get the ball rolling.

This site is dedicated to the molding of my dream to one day own and run my very own boutique/gallery/bakery/greenhouse/studio/workshop. This will be a space to keep track of inspirations for myself as an artist and for the future of my creative labors. GIDDY-UP!
